10 point check to promote safe introduction of Pointe work

Schulze, Sonja BSc, University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa

Floating effortlessly across the stage on Pointe shoes is the vision that draws little girls to classical Ballet. The unrelenting physical and mental demands of Pointe work on the dancer are only truly appreciated with experience. So how does a dance teacher know when a student is physically ready to safely take on the demands of Pointe work?

Those who are fortunate enough to have accessibility to a Practitioner with dance experience can share the responsibility with an expert. However there remain a large number of teachers who either do not have access to appropriate professional advice, or who have never considered seeking advice. The decision to commence Pointe work is usually dictated by syllabus demands alone. This is a hit and miss approach as the student is often at a very vulnerable stage in her physical development due to hormonal and growth changes. Injury risk is high, but on a very positive note, so is potential for positive change. Pre puberty is the most effective time to address negative postural habits, muscle imbalances and weakness affecting technique and injury potential.

I have compiled a 10 point check list of structural and postural factors impacting on technique and readiness for Pointe work. The aim is to assist the teacher identify problem or potential problem areas affecting technique and vulnerability to injury, prior to introducing Pointe work. It is not intended as a comprehensive screening tool. The ideal scenario in assessing readiness for Pointe work is a team approach involving the student, teacher and dance therapist who is able to advise on appropriate exercises, imagery and technique.
